Although I have no reference for this, my understanding is that notebooks and laptops are exactly the same. The reason the name changed is that when some people put the laptops on their laps, they could receive burns to their legs from the heat. To discourage this (or at least so they could shed accountability), more companies started referring to them as notebooks. Other than that, the only difference truly is size....

Hi! Well I didn't really know the answer of your question but I love looking at laptops that I wish I could have... So I did some research. A few brands that kept popping up were: Dell, HP, Alienware and Apple. I suppose Acer and Toshiba got in there somewhere, but those were the main ones. Alienware does tend to get a little pricey though. If you were into the whole Mac thing then I highly reccommend an apple Macbook- i think you can get one with 1 GB RAM and 80 GB hard drive for a little over ...

Ditto the above but here is the official version: Notebooks and Laptops are portable computers but there is a minor difference between laptops and notebooks. Laptop: A portable computer small enough to use on one's lap. Notebook: A light, portable computer that is generally thinner than a laptop. Even according to Webopedia, laptop computers are more frequently called notebook computers, though technically laptops are somewhat smaller in size than notebooks....
